Mary was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan. She married and moved to the Rochester area where she currently lives and works.
She received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1963. After taking time out to raise a family, Mary continued with her local volunteer work and entered into retail management. Corporate downsizing gave her the opportunity to return to school and pursue her art career. She earned a M.S. in Business and Art from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1999.
After considerable urging from family, friends and colleagues, Mary began to enter her artwork in local forums. She was juried into the prestigious Rochester Art Club in 2001 and had her first solo show shortly thereafter. Mary considers herself fortunate to have this time to create her art and has experienced a very successful emergence in the local art world. She has won numerous awards and has been chosen for several exhibitions, including “Where are the Best Paintings in Rochester?” in March of 2003.
Mary has always loved the beauty and diversity of the natural world. She strives to impart her sense of awe and wonder in all that nature has to offer. Common or easily overlooked subject matter will often become the focus of her work. She invites the viewer to share the magic within the natural world, and to take time to enjoy the journey that is unfolding around us every day.
Mary’s creative flair and attention to detail have encouraged her to explore several different mediums. Her portfolio includes work done in watercolor, pen & ink, and colored and graphite pencil. Recent watercolors include florals, landscapes and wildlife stills. An award winning floral painting titled “Essence” could be said to sum up her artistic philosophy, as she thoroughly explores the subject matter and gets to know it on intimate terms.
